Yes, we chant a lot in a Kundalini class :)! The sound current and Mantra are the foremost essential element in the Kundalini Yoga practice.

There’s a basic structure here, then we may add in more, based on the specific Kriyas, meditation or mantra practice.

  1. Tune in - Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo

It’s called Adi Mantra. We always tune in w/ this mantra three times to begin the class, and any Kundalini practice at home. It uplink us to the spirit of the golden chain of teachers of this lineage age.

It means: I bow to the creator, the infinite divine, I bow to all the angels, spirit guides, the inner teachers and highest self. Yogi Bhajan taught that after tune in, the teacher’s job is done, because he is taking over, the relationship is between him and the students directly.

  2. Protection Mantra - Aad Guray Nameh, Jugaad Guray Nameh, Sat Guray Nameh, Siri Guru Devay Nameh

This mantra is called Mangla Charan. We chant this mantra three times after tuning in. It’s an optional chant. It invokes the protection and blessings in time and space.

    It means:

I bow to the primal wisdom.

I bow to the truth that has existed throughout the ages.

I bow to the True wisdom.

I bow to the great Divine wisdom.

  3. Default Mantra - Sat Nam

    Sat: Truth. Nam: Self, form.

It means: I am truth, truth is my essence.

Chanting this mantra align our thoughts, actions, feelings, inputs and outputs w/ our inner truth, aka being aligned w/ our purpose and mission, on the path of our dharma. It brings balance to our being.

The way to chant is to synchronize it w/ our breathing, until it becomes an automatic habit, running constantly : silently in our mind, inhale chant Sat, exhale chant Nam. So, we are chanting Sat Nam silently throughout the whole class, w/ the Kriyas, pranayamas (breathing exercises) and meditations, except for there’re specific instructions on the mantras. We chant three rounds of long Sat Nam at the end of the class, to integrate, conclude the energy.

4. Song of Blessings - Long Time Sun

May the long time Sun, shine upon you, all love surround you, and the pure love within you, guide you all way on.

This song has been sung at the end of every Kundalini classes/events since 1970s.  It brings the energy we have created, received  and amplified to a deeper and broader level,  shares it w/ the whole humanity and beyond.  It anchors our energy and focus into the heart chakra, the gate into the Aquarian Age.

Here’s a beautiful version by Snatam Kaur.
